Station Fire

Smoke and flames from the Station Fire are visible from the Spitzer Science Center (SSC), located on the campus of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, Calif. This time-lapse video at 3 seconds per frame was obtained on Monday, August 31, 2009 from 2:45 to 3:35 PM PDT from the rooftop of the SSC. Looking towards the historic Mt Wilson observatory, the video dramatically captures the smoke erupting from the fires in the San Gabriel mountains. The tall building in the foreground is the Millikan Library on the Caltech campus.

Planetary Demolition Derby

This artist's animation shows a celestial body about the size of our moon slamming at great speed into a body the size of Mercury. NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope found evidence that a high-speed collision of this sort occurred a few thousand years ago around a young star, called HD 172555, still in the early stages of planet formation. The star is about 100 light-years from Earth.
